DOUBLE INDEMNITY wasn’t the first noir, but it did super-charge the whole crime film movement with its critical acclaim and, more importantly, its immense box office success. Billy Wilder brought his impeccable direction and Raymond Chandler added the gloriously poetic dialogue. Together they took James M. Cain’s pulp novel of greed, lust, and betrayal to grand artistic heights. Starring the incomparable Barbara Stanwyck as a scheming wife who entices fast-talking insurance salesman Fred MacMurray to murder her husband. Add the scene-stealing support of Edward G. Robinson and the stunning camera work of John F. Seitz, and you have, arguably, the most significant film noir of all time.
